Chapter 10 of 16
Silver research committee: a physical story under stress
Build a decision memo that reconciles industrial activity, inventory, positioning, curve and implementation before selecting an exposure.
In this chapter
Begin with the strongest opposing case #
If the headline is an industrial deficit, examine substitution, inventory release, investment liquidation and a different forecast vintage. If the story is a short-term squeeze, ask whether the data identify the correct location, form and availability rather than a large total stock change elsewhere.
An institutional-style note should make disagreement possible. Describe observations that would weaken the thesis and name the next measurement/release that could supply them. A confident narrative with no potential invalidation is not a research plan.
Connect horizons explicitly #
Annual fabrication demand, monthly vault stocks, weekly positioning and intraday option prices have different clocks. A long-run balance can inform a regime hypothesis without timing the next session. Construct an information timeline showing what was observable when a trade or hedge decision is proposed.
Do not interpolate a sparse physical series into daily certainty. Mark missing data, revisions and publication lag. A new-to-you report can be old information to other participants, and a current commentary can repeat an older underlying survey.
Choose the expression to match the question #
A physical procurement hedge, an outright future, a matched option spread and a gold/silver relative-value book express different risks. Compare them using the stated objective, holding period, cash path and possible failure rather than the largest hypothetical profit.
For each candidate, specify thesis, observable trigger, invalidation, gross exposure, costs, liquidity, funding and settlement. Include a no-position choice and explain the unresolved conditions that would keep the desk from proceeding even with a plausible view.
Reconcile scenarios rather than stacking narratives #
Build a scenario table varying activity, intensity, investor demand, accessible stock and financing. Price effects are not obtained by simply adding percentages from these drivers. A price model needs an explicit response function and validation; otherwise present the table as qualitative mechanism research.
Separately compute the P&L of each proposed exposure under specified price, FX, basis and volatility paths. Scenario probabilities need an estimation rationale. Do not assign them solely to produce a positive expected value.
Audit the subsequent decision #
At the review date, preserve the original evidence and assumptions. Separate which observation changed, whether the model predicted the right mechanism, whether execution matched the plan and whether the path remained fundable. A profitable trade can still reveal a bad research process.
Close the memo with accept for paper testing, revise or reject. Record the reason and what future evidence would change it. The purpose of the committee exercise is accountable uncertainty, not a dramatic headline that cannot be tested.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional source-conflict memo
A model shows industrial activity +20% and silver intensity −15%, producing metal use +2%. A separate inventory series falls 5%, but its perimeter overlaps product holdings and has a different observation date. The two figures cannot simply be added into a 7% demand shock.
The research action is to reconcile period, perimeter and mechanism. For a proposed 3-million-dollar exposure, a declared −12% adverse price scenario means −360,000 before hedges, FX and costs. Whether the thesis sounds persuasive does not change the arithmetic of that loss-capacity test.
Common mistakes
- Adding incompatible physical metrics into one price forecast.
- Choosing the instrument only after looking at the largest historical gain.
- Assigning probabilities to justify a desired trade.
Industrial use grows 2% and a different inventory perimeter falls 5%. What should the memo do?
Make this chapter useful
Can you defend the reasoning?
Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.
Desk assignment
What to submit
Submit an evidence timeline, competing-case memo, reconciled exposure scenarios, cash stress and a documented accept/revise/reject decision.
Use the research ledger for dated evidence, or the module workbooks for calculations. Separate observations, assumptions and interpretation.
