Chapter 16 of 16
Silver event desk: combine Fed, growth, positioning and technical execution
Integrate the reports into a realistic decision process without pretending that more indicators automatically create an edge.
In this chapter
Assign each input a job #
A macro input supplies a conditional regime view; industrial research describes physical demand; positioning describes classified exposures; delivery data describe a specific process; price structure defines a candidate entry and invalidation. They are not five interchangeable buy votes.
Keep an information clock beside every input. An annual survey cannot confirm an intraday breakout at the same speed as the current price bar. Weekly COT is lagged, and delivery notices refer to a contract and business date. Do not silently synchronize them to today.
Write competing scenarios before the release #
A softer inflation print with stable growth could support a different silver path from softer inflation driven by severe demand deterioration. A stronger print can raise yields while industrial activity remains firm. Map mechanisms and opposing forces instead of one fixed arrow from CPI to silver.
Use a scenario table with observation, expected transmission, disconfirming evidence and intended action. Leave probabilities unassigned unless there is an estimation basis. A polished table does not make subjective weights measured probabilities.
Use the technical candidate only when eligible #
Take the separately specified failed-break/reclaim or breakout/retest setup, with frozen range, completed bars, ATR method, entry, invalidation and session exit. Set any event blackout before observing the outcome. Do not change the timeframe after a stop to keep the thesis alive.
Volume and open interest can be tested participation filters; neither identifies a guaranteed informed buyer. COT extremes and a bank forecast do not override the invalidation. If the chart qualifies but the minimum lot fails the risk test, the outcome is no trade.
Stress the Indian implementation #
Translate dollar price and FX consistently into the actual local instrument. Add basis, spread, fees, whole-lot constraints and collateral. A silver option has volatility, time, exercise and possible settlement/devolvement exposure beyond the underlying chart.
Run at least a price gap, rupee move, volatility shock and liquidity widening. Related gold, silver and mining-equity positions may lose together. Available cash must survive the path rather than only the final net P&L shown in a scenario.
Review the decision, not only the money made #
Keep forecast quality, execution quality, rule compliance and outcome in separate columns. A profitable rule breach is still a process breach; a correctly executed loss can be within the tested distribution. Record skipped opportunities as well as trades.
At the next review, ask which source changed, which mechanism failed and whether the original rule remains worth paper testing. Avoid adding a new indicator after every loss. Compare versions on later data and keep the original ledger intact.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional release-day no-trade
A qualified setup risks 8 price points plus a 2-point friction allowance on a fictional 100-unit lot: 1,000 per lot. The loss budget is 1,500, so one lot fits that test. A gap stress of 25 points plus 2 friction implies 2,700 per lot.
If the predeclared event stress capacity is 2,000, the position fails that independent constraint. The correct paper record is skipped for stress capacity, even if the next candle rallies. A winning missed trade does not retroactively repair the financing gap.
Common mistakes
- Counting overlapping indicators as independent proof.
- Letting a bank target override a failed technical rule.
- Checking planned stop loss but ignoring gap funding.
One lot fits the stop budget but fails the event-gap cash constraint. What should happen?
Make this chapter useful
Can you defend the reasoning?
Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.
Desk assignment
What to submit
Complete a paper event memo with a dated input table, competing mechanisms, frozen technical rule, no-trade conditions, stress sheet and post-event review.
Use the research ledger for dated evidence, or the module workbooks for calculations. Separate observations, assumptions and interpretation.
