Chapter 15 of 16
Search interest and popular silver questions: measure attention properly
Use search data as an attention proxy, answer practical investor questions and avoid inventing most-searched rankings.
In this chapter
A useful question list is not a verified popularity ranking #
Start with candidate queries such as silver price today, silver ETF versus physical, gold silver ratio, MCX silver margin, silver industrial demand and silver delivery report. Include Hindi and English variants where relevant. This is a research watchlist, not a measured list of the most-searched terms.
Search-result counts and autocomplete suggestions are not reliable absolute demand rankings. To publish most searched, state the platform, geography, language, period, category, search property and metric, and retain an export that supports the ordering.
Know what Google Trends measures #
Google Trends uses sampled, normalized search interest. A website chart’s 0–100 scale describes relative interest within the selected comparison; 100 is the peak in that selection, not 100 searches. A zero can reflect insufficient volume rather than nobody searching.
A new time window or term comparison can rescale the series. Topic and exact search term are different choices. Record the settings and download date so another reader can reproduce the exercise rather than compare unrelated screenshots.
Attention, intention and purchases are separate #
Someone searching silver crash might own a holding, be considering a purchase, or simply be reading news. Search interest does not identify the direction or size of their transaction. Strong attention after a rally may be a response to price rather than its cause.
Compare the timing with investment-product flows, coin/bar estimates and positioning, recognising their different clocks. Do not convert an index point into ounces bought or interpret a viral phrase as confirmed physical scarcity.
Turn popular questions into useful research #
For ETF versus physical, compare the claim, expenses, custody, spread and resale process. For the gold/silver ratio, define common units and explain why relative price is not a timing signal. For margin questions, link to operative exchange/broker rules rather than a stale fixed percentage.
For delivery-report questions, distinguish issues/stops from withdrawals. For industrial demand, reconcile activity and intensity. The goal is to answer what a person needs to decide, not fill a page with repeated keywords or a dramatic target unsupported by evidence.
Test an attention hypothesis without hindsight #
A paper study could predefine a weekly attention threshold and ask whether subsequent volatility differs. Use only the export available then, declare the return window and compare with a simple baseline. Search sampling and revisions complicate exact historical reconstruction.
Do not claim a profitable sentiment strategy from a few selected spikes. Include quiet periods, false alarms, costs and a held-out evaluation. If a reproducible data export is unavailable, present the work as a proposed method, not completed empirical research.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional normalization trap
Two separately downloaded charts each peak at 100: one for silver price today and another for silver ETF. That does not mean equal search volume. The scales may have different denominators and selected windows.
Rerun an aligned comparison with the same geography, dates, search property and query treatment. Even then, the normalized index is not an absolute count or a position-sizing instruction.
Common mistakes
- Publishing a most-searched ranking with no measured dataset.
- Reading a Trends index of 100 as 100 searches.
- Inferring purchases or direction directly from attention.
Two separate Trends charts both peak at 100. What can you infer?
Make this chapter useful
Can you defend the reasoning?
Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.
Desk assignment
What to submit
Export an India-focused term/topic comparison with full settings, then write three practical answers and one hypothesis the search data cannot establish.
Use the research ledger for dated evidence, or the module workbooks for calculations. Separate observations, assumptions and interpretation.
