Start with a regime hypothesis #
A technical framework asks how a price pattern behaves under a specified market state. Define trend, range and event conditions before choosing the entry. For a research candidate, a weekly trend filter might compare completed weekly closes with a predeclared moving average, while daily bars define the setup. The unfinished current week is not a completed weekly observation.
A macro thesis can supply context without overriding a price invalidation. Technical analysis should make an intended action testable, not provide an attractive chart annotation after the outcome. NSE and CME technical-analysis education describe the tools; that does not demonstrate profitability of this particular specification.
Choose the data representation before drawing levels #
A spot gold series, a particular COMEX future and an MCX contract can show different levels because of currency, maturity, local basis and session definitions. A back-adjusted continuous series can help describe returns while not representing executable contract prices.
Freeze timezone, bar construction, holidays, contract selection and roll treatment. Use the actual traded contract to specify cash risk and execution. Do not place an MCX order using an unconverted dollar spot stop, or interpret a roll adjustment as a price breakout.
Define a concrete breakout-and-retest candidate #
One illustrative paper specification uses the previous 20 completed daily highs as a range ceiling. A completed daily close above the ceiling establishes a candidate. The first retest within three completed sessions must touch the ceiling and close above it. Entry is at the next eligible open, with a maximum adverse entry gap from the completed retest close of 0.5 times the previous completed daily ATR.
ATR is a volatility measure, not an edge or a probability guarantee. Declare the lookback and smoothing method; for example, a 14-session simple mean of true range is different from Wilder smoothing. True range uses the maximum of high−low, |high−previous close| and |low−previous close|. All parameters here are unvalidated study choices.
Use structure for invalidation and volatility for feasibility #
For this version, initial invalidation is the retest low minus 0.25 of the ATR known before entry. Solve position size from price risk, actual multiplier and friction; then apply cash, whole-lot and aggregate heat constraints. If the price risk exceeds the permitted volatility or loss budget, skip instead of moving the stop to make the lot fit.
A predeclared release window can prohibit new entries. Freeze which events and window lengths qualify; otherwise it is easy to remove losing trades retrospectively as “news exceptions.” A stop can be breached by gaps, and a completed-bar condition does not guarantee a fill at that bar’s final price.
Use confirmation without pretending it identifies an owner #
Inspect contract-specific volume and open interest with their units and dates. A rise in open interest does not reveal that only bullish traders entered: outstanding contracts have both long and short sides. COT categories and aggregate open interest are different datasets and clocks.
If volume or participation is an eligibility filter, state its formula and test the filtered and unfiltered versions in a chronological evaluation. Correlated indicators can repeat the same price information rather than provide independent confirmation.
Freeze exits and assess the full distribution #
For a paper version, exit at initial invalidation, 2 initial price-R, or the close of the fifth holding session. Use a conservative fill rule when a bar touches both boundaries. Register the rule before evaluating it and measure skipped entries, gaps, costs, losing clusters and regime performance.
If the chosen expression is an option, perform a separate premium, IV, time and settlement analysis. The spot/futures price-R does not directly size the option. A correct technical direction can be overwhelmed by the price paid for volatility or a funding transition.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional structure-and-ATR worksheet
A normalized price ceiling is 2,000, qualified retest low 1,995 and previous completed ATR 20. The buffer is 5, giving invalidation at 1,990. With a completed retest close of 2,002, entry at 2,004 gaps 2 points, within the 10-point maximum under the stated 0.5 ATR allowance. That entry has 14 price points of initial risk and a 2R price objective of 2,032.
For a fictional 100-unit contract and 1-point per-unit friction, planned loss allowance is (14+1)×100 = 1,500 per lot. A 1,000 loss budget allows zero whole lots. The chart qualification does not authorise borrowing or a tighter arbitrary stop.
Common mistakes
- Using an unfinished higher-timeframe bar as confirmation.
- Sizing an MCX position from an unconverted dollar chart.
- Treating an ATR threshold or volume filter as a verified edge.
The chart setup qualifies but one whole contract exceeds the risk budget. What does this paper specification do?
Make this chapter useful
Can you defend the reasoning?
Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.
Desk assignment
What to submit
Submit a timezone/contract data sheet, completed-bar regime test, ATR calculation, entry/exit rule and cost-aware paper ledger.
Use the research ledger for dated evidence, or the module workbooks for calculations. Separate observations, assumptions and interpretation.
