Bank forecasts without hero worship: a dated analyst research lab

Read J.P. Morgan, BofA, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo material without mixing teams, horizons or secondary reporting with an original note.

4 min read · Original educational chapter

A bank name is not a complete citation #

Identify the legal entity, research team, analyst where stated, publication date, asset, unit and forecast horizon. Global Research, private banking, wealth management and asset management can publish different views. An index methodology is not a price prediction.

Use public originals where available. If only a news extract is accessible, label that limitation and do not imply access to the client report. Do not manufacture an analyst name, model or target to fill a table. An institution’s name is a source attribution, not an endorsement of this course.

J.P. Morgan: distinguish average from destination #

The public 2026 Global Research outlook indexed during this review describes gold at $5,000/oz in Q4 2026 and $4,753/oz for the full-year average. The primary page returned an access error when opened; this is a search-indexed public summary, not a reviewed full model or a live target.

The learning question is the horizon distinction. A quarterly or year-end level and an annual average can coexist without contradiction. Archive the publication vintage before evaluating it, and check whether the page has subsequently been revised.

BofA: keep the secondary-source label visible #

The October 2025 Reuters extract hosted by TradingView reports a 2026 gold outlook of $5,000/oz with a $4,400 average, and silver at $65/oz with a $56.25 average. It also reports positioning concerns. This is a public news extract; the underlying client note was not available for review.

These are historical forecast examples, not current trade calls or realised outcomes. The short extract does not fully define the endpoint convention, so do not silently relabel the $65 outlook as an annual average or an exact year-end settlement target.

Morgan Stanley: a useful macro framework without an invented metal target #

Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s September 2025 BEAT, from its Portfolio Solutions Group, discussed weaker labour conditions against above-target inflation and a pathway for Fed cuts. It is a dated multi-asset allocation document. No specific bullion price target from that document is asserted here.

The exercise is to extract the conditional macro mechanism, then ask how it could affect real yields, currency and industrial activity. Do not attribute a separate sell-side commodity team’s forecast to this portfolio team, or label a historical return table a forecast.

Wells Fargo: a dated revision and a competing oil channel #

The 15 June 2026 Investment Strategy report by Wells Fargo Investment Institute lowered its 2026 year-end gold target to $5,300–$5,500/oz while discussing oil-related inflation and rate headwinds. This is that report’s historical view, not a statement of today’s target.

It supplies a countercase to a simplistic oil-up/gold-up rule. Extract assumptions and the evidence that could weaken them. A change in target may reflect changed inputs, horizon or model; a revision is not automatically proof of either incompetence or predictive skill.

Score a forecast only against its stated object #

Compare an annual-average forecast with the same annual benchmark average, not the year’s highest intraday print. Preserve a revision history rather than selecting the best target after the outcome. For an interval forecast, record whether the defined outcome fell within it and the width of the interval.

As of this lesson’s research date, full-year 2026 is unfinished. No final 2026 accuracy verdict is possible. Use completed historical forecasts from the LBMA archive for an ex-post exercise, and retain all qualifying forecasters rather than only the famous successful calls.

Hypothetical worked example

A fictional scoring error

A fictional analyst predicts an annual average of 30 and an endpoint of 35. The realised annual average is 28 while the endpoint is 36. The average error is +2 in forecast-minus-actual units; the endpoint error is −1.

Comparing 30 with 36 would score the wrong object. A path that briefly traded at 35 does not prove either the annual average or endpoint forecast was correct.

Common mistakes

  • Calling an annual average a year-end target.
  • Treating a news summary as the complete client report.
  • Declaring a full-year forecast accurate before the year ends.

What must match before scoring a bank forecast?

Make this chapter useful

Can you defend the reasoning?

Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.

Desk assignment

What to submit

Build a forecast ledger with all four institutions, access status, exact horizon, assumptions, revisions and a future evaluation date; leave unavailable fields explicitly unknown.

Use the research ledger for dated evidence, or the module workbooks for calculations. Separate observations, assumptions and interpretation.

Sources and further reading

Further-reading references from the curriculum source list. Contract sizes, expiry calendars, settlement references, margin parameters and tax treatment can change; verify the current operative documents for the actual product. Worked figures are illustrative, not current quotes.
